About our data
This directory refreshes itself: on a schedule, each listing is re-checked against the business's own website, and the site is rebuilt from whatever survives that check.
How a listing gets its details
- Discovery. Businesses are found from public sources such as OpenStreetMap and public registers, and from map search used only to find names and addresses.
- Extraction. For each business, a model reads the business's own website and proposes structured details. Every site-sourced value must carry a verbatim quote from the page and the URL it came from.
- Code check. A program verifies that each quote really appears in the text fetched from that URL, and that the value is consistent with the quote. Values that fail the check are not published.
- Review. A second model reviews the things code cannot check: booleans, categories and summary sentences. It judges wording; it never replaces the code check.
- Publication. Only records that pass all of the above are built into this site.
What the badges mean
- Checked <date> — the details were re-verified against the business's website on that date.
- Stale — the website changed and re-verification is pending, so details may be out of date.
- Unverified — the listing came from discovery only and has not yet been checked against a website.
- Closed — the business appears to have closed; the listing is kept for a time and then removed.
What happens when a website changes
Each refresh fetches the pages again. If a page's content hash is unchanged, its values keep their last check. If it changed, the values are re-extracted and re-checked, and the listing is marked stale until the new values pass.
What we never show
Review scores, review counts and photos from map platforms are discovery inputs at most and are never stored or published here. Website-checked details link to the business's own website as their source. Business-supplied media is labelled separately below.
Correcting and removing listings
If a detail is wrong, owners, staff and members can request a change. Human corrections ("overrides") are applied and survive refreshes. Closed or defunct businesses can be reported for removal.
Business photos and video
Listing photos or a YouTube video may be supplied by a business owner or staff member with permission to share them. We review each item and add approved media by hand. Media is kept separate from details checked against the business website. We do not publish photos copied from map platforms.
Visitor reviews
Visitors can review a gym on its listing page. Reviews are opinions, not details checked against the business website, and they never change a listing's details or its checked badge. We do not show an overall star rating. These are our own reviews; the map-platform scores above are still never shown.
A person reads every review before it appears. We publish reviews based on the writer's own experience of the business. We reject reviews written by the business's owners or staff, or on their behalf, and reviews that are abusive, name or describe individual staff or members, share personal details, advertise, or are not about the business. We may remove personal details such as a surname or phone number, but we do not otherwise change what a review says.
If you think a published review breaks these rules, report it and we will take another look.
